It’s pretty much been proven now that a strong social media presence is a huge asset to companies both big and small. But you don’t have to have hundreds of thousands of followers to have a good presence online! These days, it’s not just about having lots of followers, it’s about the content you’re putting out there, how often you post and how much you engage with your community.
We love social media here at KM and we’re learning as we go every day, so here are some of our top suggestions:
Think about your channels and your audience!
Different businesses and individuals will without a doubt find certain channels more useful. For example, image-based Instagram is great for businesses selling items or services who can create enticing imagery and display their products, whilst Twitter can be great for linking back to your website to share informative blogs and content.
We strongly suggest setting up a profile for at least Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as these are the key channels that audiences spend time on and love. It’s a good idea to think about your audiences too, and what kind things they will want to see, and where they might be going online to look for information.
Having a look at your competition can also be a good move at this point, not to steal ideas, but to see what kind of posts are working with the audiences that you’ll be sharing with!
Create an eye-catching Profile!
This may sound obvious, but getting your profile right is so important! Mainly because what you say about yourself in your bio and your display image will reflect a huge amount about your business or organisation when people are looking to potentially follow you.
A well-crafted profile suggests you’re on the ball and proud of your image as a business. Make sure you also fill out all the details about you or your business, getting all your links and telephone numbers correct first time – if someone clicks through to your site from social media, you need to make sure it’s going to take them to the right place!
We also find it’s so important to be human online too! Coming across as a faceless corporate isn’t going to resonate well with many followers. Make sure you get your personality across to people on social media, it’s a sure way to really stand out!
Schedule, Schedule...and yes you guessed it.. Schedule!
One of the key things for success on social media is regular posting! Especially with a platform like Instagram where it’s so heavily influenced by the algorithm – often you need to be posting regularly to gain any kind of traction. If there’s a common theme between the biggest brands on social media, it’s that they post on a consistent basis.
But posting every day when you have a million other things to do can be impossible. So at KM, we really advocate scheduling your tweets ahead. We’d recommend programs like TweetDeck, Buffer and Hootsuite to help you schedule all your posts in – they are easy apps to use and mean you can dedicate a chunk of time to sourcing content and images, and scheduling them in to go out at a later date (when you’re busy off doing something else).
3 – 4 posts each week on your main channels is a great way to start and worth the effort to see results.
Scheduling posts is of course a great way to stay organised and ensure regular content. But don’t forget about reactive posts too! Sometimes there may a piece of news that breaks that’s really relevant to your industry, or someone will do something on social media that you could comment on.
It’s great to make sure you post reactive content sometimes, along with scheduled tweets, so that your followers can know what you’re getting up to and you can address things that sometimes can’t be predicted or scheduled in!
There might be a hashtag that starts trending without warning, so you want to make sure you’re on the case – it’s always worth checking your social channels daily, just to make sure you aren’t missing anything.
