It’s that time of the year again – a new year and a new start! We know full well that not everyone is a fan of setting new years’ resolutions (we don’t blame you) as so often, many of us find ourselves setting unachievable goals which fall by the wayside once we reach February.
Yet by the same token, there is something psychologically poignant about a ‘new year’ and a metaphorical clean slate. Sometimes it’s really important to have a bit of a ‘refresh’ and often, after a hectic run up to Christmas and too much over-indulgence, January offers a renewed sense of purpose and a chance to take stock!
So don’t worry, we’re not going to be bombarding you with a series of unattainable goals – but below are some of our top tips to help get your year off to a good start!
Set realistic goals
We can’t stress the importance of setting ‘realistic’ goals, after all, being too ambitious with your goals can often lead to a greater sense of failure if you don’t hit your (unattainable) targets!
We suggest starting small. For example, a common goal for January is often upping your exercise. Declaring that you’ll run 5k by the end of January is possibly a step too far, but you could start small, by saying that you’ll gradually build up your weekly jogs and spend a certain amount of time running each week.
The same with the generic new years’ diet. After too much food over Christmas, I think we all find ourselves going on a bit of a detox over the first few weeks for January. But it’s got to be sustainable over the long term! A juice cleanse is all well and good but what happens when you start eating normally again? Instead of declaring you’ll never eat chocolate again, why not take it week by week with healthy meals and see how you feel.
Declutter your space
Getting back to work in January after the Christmas break is often a bit of a struggle after time off, yet if you enjoy what you do or have a business to run, then often you return to the office with a renewed sense of purpose.
However, you might have left your office in a bit of a mess when you rushed out for the Christmas break. Or you might have overflowing filing cabinets from 2018, documents you no longer need or a sense that you need to re-jig your whole office.
This applies to the home too. Once you’ve cleared away the decorations, cleaned up the dust and debris from Christmas, a big clean and a decluttering will do wonders for your mood. This way, you’ll start the year feeling organised in control of things – get rid of things you don’t need, put clutter away and light some candles to create a calming and energising (and clutter-free) environment to be in.
Try something new
A new year can often be a chance to try something new. If you don’t want to stagnate and feel like shaking things up a bit, then it could be a good time to do something different.
That could be anything, from joining a new exercise class, taking up dancing, switching up how you travel to work or even booking a holiday to somewhere you haven’t been before.
It could even be as simple as trying a new food or eating at a new restaurant, getting your coffee from somewhere new or changing the smallest thing in your routine. But sometimes it’s good to do things differently and make sure there’s no sense of being ‘in a rut’.
Healthy body, healthy mind
The new year is always a good time to check in on where we’re at health wise, both physically and mentally! Research has proven that a healthy body and exercise can have a hugely positive impact on your state of mind too, so could it be time to check in on your health and fitness regime?
Starting (and sticking) to any new fitness plan or diet is hard work, but there are things you can do to help yourself stay on the wagon. Start small, for example, and like we said earlier in this blog, set little goals for exercising – even if it’s a short walk a day!
Getting outside is hugely beneficial for state of mind and so why not aim to spend more time outdoors in 2019, or up your intake of fruit and vegetables, or drink more water. You don’t have to make dramatic changes, but the little things do add up and you’ll be a lot more productive if you’re feeling healthy both inside and out.
Reflect and improve
Sometimes with the new year, we can spend far too much time thinking about the future and not enough reflecting on the positives from the year just gone.
Don’t forget to take some time to reflect on your achievements for 2018! Whether they are big or small, it’s so important to remind yourself of how far you’ve come since last year – write your biggest things down if you need to remind yourself of how well you’re doing.
Then once you’ve spent some time reflecting, you can set out some goals for the next year. Look at areas of your life that you can improve on, write a bucket list of things you’d like to see and do or be spontaneous and book that holiday for later in the year – give yourself something to look forward to!
Ultimately – let’s make the start of 2019 as positive as possible and remember not to compare what you’re doing to everyone else, do what’s right for you and stick to your own (attainable) goals!
